JCF’s grant will fill a critical gap in service for an area that is experiencing increased poverty, and suffered the loss of the only Jewish community run food pantry on the North Shore of Long Island.
Jewish Communal Fund (JCF) trustee Jerry Cohen, and Vice President of Philanthropic Services, Ellen Israelson were honored guests at the opening of the Jewish Communal Fund Food Pantry at the Mid-Island Y JCC (MIYJCC) in Plainview. The food panty was made possible in large measure by a generous three-year grant from JCF’s Special Gift Fund.

The Jewish Communal Fund Food Pantry will provide much-needed food (particularly kosher food), basic pantry staples, and toiletries (donated by Henry Schein) for more than 100 clients a month. The Food Pantry is a concierge-style pantry where recipients will have the ability to select the provisions most suited to their personal and household needs. JCF’s grant will enable the MIYJCC to fill a critical gap in service for an area that is experiencing increased poverty, and suffered the loss of the only Jewish community run food pantry on the North Shore of Long Island.
Rick Lewis, CEO, and Allan M. Blum, President of the Board of Trustees of the Mid-Island Y JCC, opened the program by thanking the Jewish Communal Fund and acknowledging the important role JCF played in providing this essential service. Gail Warrack, Director of Volunteer Services at the JCC, relayed the story of one client who expressed gratitude not only for the food that was provided to her and her family, but also for the dignified and compassionate manner in which she was treated. Jerry Cohen and Ellen Israelson cut the ribbon, unveiling the new food pantry that is now officially open to serve the Long Island community.
